Teeth Whitening and Bleaching

by John Fraser

How many times do we see articles on television and in print about the incredible pressures on today's society to look good? How many of us would admit to not being totally happy with the way we look? How many of us know that many of the images we see in print have been digitally manipulated? How many of us have considered teeth whitening or considered dental treatment to gain that famous Hollywood smile?

Just four simple questions but the answers will tell us a great deal about how we feel about ourselves and how we would like to appear to others. One of the most important factors effecting the way in which people perceive us is the appearance of our face. Nearly everyone would willingly admit that they would like some improvement to their face such as younger looking skin. However one of the most important and most highly visible features of the face is our teeth and having a radiant smile can make a world of difference hence the massive interest in teeth whitening products.

Yes, the Hollywood smile is all the rage and more and more stars have dental bleaching treatments on a regular basis to maintain permanent whiteness. With so many on TV, film and in glossy magazines having the perfect smile the need for the ordinary man and woman in the street to have one seems to be increasing and there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.

Today the need to have pure white teeth and a wide smile seems to be one of the most important requirements of looking great. More and more of the stars of Hollywood are having their teeth treated to ensure that they have the whitest teeth. The more stars we see with perfect teeth the more we feel the need to whiten our own teeth and, luckily, there are a number of ways in which teeth can be whitened.

Most types of teeth whitening treatment include the use of bleaching agents of different strengths. Home bleaching, using over the counter products, is highly popular. The professionals also use bleach to whiten teeth but the dentist can offer both external and internal bleaching which is not possible at home. Laser bleaching is another method becoming more common these days.

Home bleaching can be done in a number of ways. The easiest, but often the least effective and the one involving most risk, ways to whiten teeth at home is by using an over-the-counter (OTC) preparation. These kits contain a weak hydrogen peroxide gel which is applied to the teeth and left for around half an hour. The most effective home bleaching utilizes materials supplied by your dentist a bleaching gel and a rubber mouth tray are provided. The gel is much stronger that OTC gels and the mouth tray ensures that the gel stays in contact with the teeth.

Alternatively you may wish to try professional teeth whitening. This treatment is performed in the dental surgery and also involves the use of a bleaching agent and mouth tray. How this treatment differs from home treatments is that a stronger solution can be used. Furthermore various types of light emitting equipment are used to enhance the effectiveness of the whitening gel.

Combined teeth whitening is the most powerful technique used to bleach teeth. Combined bleaching is actually a combination of the two types mentioned above, home bleaching and professional bleaching. Usually home bleaching is carried out before your professional treatment however, depending on the products use, there may be further home bleaching after your session at the dental surgery.

One of the most unusual treatments it known as internal bleaching. Firstly a small hole is place at the rear of the tooth to enable an amount of bleach to be injected into it. The hole is then plugged with a temporary filing and left for a week. After a week the bleach is extracted and the hole filled with a more permanent material. This type of treatment is very commonly used in conjunction with the other methods mentioned here which focus on the external tooth surface.
