Smoking - Does It Cause Panic Attacks
This is a difficult question, but in general it has been found in some studies that non-smokers are roughly 3 times less-likely to get panic attacks or panic disorder than smokers.
Recent research pointed out the fact that smoking will not only impact humans physically but will also bring a mental impact by showing adverse effects when dealing with individuals suffering from mental illness.
There are several symptoms with panic attacks, like trembling, fear of dying, heart palpitations, choking, sweating, flushes or chills, chest pain and dizziness among others.
Individuals that suffer from frequent panic attack episodes or live in constant fear of them happening again end up having a panic disorder. In this circumstance smoking actually plays a causal role even if it is not directly linked with the condition.
Basically, smoking will increase the risk of a person suffering from a panic attack. If you quit this activity you will be happy to know that the risk of a first time panic attack went down with the elimination of smoking although there is no study to show whether or not quitting smoking aids in reducing risks in people that were smokers.
A person who is a smoker should quit as tobacco is known to increase panic attacks in the case of susceptible persons. Nicotine does have all sorts of effects on the human brain as well as it can stimulate it and cause several kinds of different feelings.
Carbon monoxide is exhaled when individual is smoking and person's brain and at the same time his/her body might think it's suffocating. This is because panic attacks acts as false alarm and carbon monoxide can trigger these episodes in people who are prone to overreacting.
Smoking also increases stress and during panic attacks the body is actually responding violently to stress factors in some situations. Just think about it! After smoking you do not feel calmer although this is what a lot of people tend to think.
Breathing and relaxation techniques are very important in the treatment solutions we have for anxiety disorders and smoking actually increases the chest breathing for individuals prone to such problems.
All this makes it more difficult to learn the right breathing techniques to control panic attacks and this will add to the suffering of person having an anxiety attack. In that way smoking does have a direct negative link with panic attacks when dealing with ways to get rid of those anxiety attacks and not just prevent them.
